THE BEGINNING

Our Story began with George and Marie Cavanaugh’s desire to help raise funds for their church in South Dakota. Experimenting with her amazing pecan roll recipe, Marie created a variety of delicious candy confections to sell. The fund-raiser proved successful, and afterwards people still wanted to buy her chocolates. With a dream of opening a candy store and a one pound box of their chocolates as collateral, George and Marie went to the bank to apply for a loan. They left the bank with the loan, an empty box, and their first customer. The banker had eaten the whole box of their chocolates during the interview and was so impressed that he approved the loan and ordered over 200 pounds of chocolates for his clients. Mrs. Cavanaugh’s Chocolates was born!

Mrs. Cavanaugh’s Chocolates &amp; Ice Cream has been family owned and operated since 1964 and is still currently owned and operated by members of the 2nd and 3rd generations of the Cavanaugh family. We maintain George and Marie’s standard of excellence by using only the finest ingredients, like fresh cream and butter and the highest quality quality of chocolate. Our factory is located in North Salt Lake, Utah where we offer tours to the public and a retail store in the front. There are 5 other retail stores throughout the Salt Lake valley: Bountiful, North Ogden, Layton Hills Mall, Orem and one store in Spokane, Washington.

It all started with a guy who really liked oranges. People called him Julius Freed. Julius liked oranges so much, in fact, that he opened his very own orange juice stand. Sales were slow. But Julius was not alone. He had a friend named Bill Hamlin. Bill also really liked oranges, but they upset his stomach. So Bill got an idea: he blended his orange juice with a few choice ingredients to make it less acidic. It also happened to make it frothy and delicious. Bill introduced the drink to Julius. Julius introduced the drink to his customers. His customers introduced their friends. And soon the store was lined with thirsty fans shouting, “Give me an orange, Julius!” Sales went through the roof and an original was born.
